Richard Martino Intelligence Versus Knowledge
Compare and Contrast
Knowledge is the possession of information;
and, intelligence is the ability to acquire, analyze and apply information.
In computer terminology, knowledge may be measured in bytes;
and, intelligence may be measured in bytes per second, for example.
Both are important in business;
however, intelligence is more important than knowledge.
Business tasks obviously require knowledge;
but, doing a business task better or faster requires intelligence.
Recognizing Intelligence
Both Elbert Hubbard and Robert Half have been attributed as saying:
There is something much more scarce, something rarer than ability. It is the ability to recognize ability.
Erik Erikson credits Sigmund Freud with the second principle of psychoanalysis:
You will not see in another what you have not learned to recognize in yourself.
Richard Martino has Both
Richard Martino graduated magna cum laude in physics and mathematics and
minored in computer science at Penn State.
120 credit hours were required to graduate;
he achieved 176 credit hours in the same four years,
47% more than required.
Although not required to graduate,
Richard also took organic chemistry, electronics, semiconductor physics and Russian.
Since college, Richard has taken only one two day course in JavaScript.
He taught himself all other technologies: C/C++, UNIX, Oracle, Informix, HTML.
Given a compiler and a manual (or the Internet),
he has learned and can learn any new technology quickly.
Recently, he helped his daughter with her calculus homework (find the volume of the solid
generated by the intersection of two different functions of x rotated about the y-axis).
He had not done this in over twenty years.
It took him 30 minutes to solve the first problem, 10 minutes for the second, 4 for the third.
Each problem thereafter took him 2 minutes to solve.
